Tangalle Police Seize Rs. 9.8 Billion Worth of Narcotics, Arrest Six Suspects

Police have arrested six suspects, including the two sons of a deceased individual, following the discovery of a massive narcotics haul in Seenimodara, Tangalle, yesterday (22).

According to police, drugs worth nearly Rs. 9,888 million were recovered from three lorries during a special operation launched after the suspicious deaths of two men at a house in the area.

The haul included 284.94 kilograms of heroin and 420.976 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’), amounting to a total of 705.91 kilograms. In addition, police seized a T-56 assault rifle and five pistols.

Investigations revealed that the drug consignment belonged to an underworld figure known as ‘Unakuruwa Shantha’, who is suspected to be managing narcotics operations from overseas. The man who died while receiving hospital treatment was identified as ‘Unakuruwa Thusitha’, believed to be Shantha’s local operator in Sri Lanka.

Among those arrested are Thusitha’s two sons and the owners of the three lorries used to transport the drugs. All suspects are set to be produced before the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court today (23).

Tangalle Police and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) have launched a comprehensive investigation into the case.
