Sri Lanka Salt Shortage Worsens as 400 Imported Containers Remain Stuck at Colombo Harbour

Colombo – Around 400 containers carrying approximately 28,000 metric tons of imported salt, meant for local packaging, remain uncleared at the Colombo Harbour, according to the Sri Lanka Salt Producers’ Association.

The association alleges that government inefficiency and inaction are the main reasons behind the delay in releasing the consignments.

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka’s domestic salt production dropped sharply due to adverse weather conditions, creating a shortage in the local market and driving up retail prices.

In response, the government approved salt imports for household use on two separate occasions. However, the prolonged clearance delays have prevented the stocks from reaching consumers, further affecting market stability.

The association warns that unless the issue is resolved swiftly, the shortage will persist and prices may rise further.
