Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union Announces Islandwide Strike From Tomorrow

The Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union, along with the United Postal Trade Unions’ Front (UPTUF), has announced that they will launch a strike action starting at 4.00 p.m. tomorrow (17).

Union leaders confirmed that the strike is being launched over 19 key demands. These include payment of overtime allowances for postal officers and opposition to the directive requiring administrative and accounts staff to record attendance through fingerprint machines.

The trade unions stated that the action will begin tomorrow evening at the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and will escalate into a continuous islandwide strike affecting postal and administrative offices from 12.00 midnight onwards.

Meanwhile, Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara assured that the 3,354 sub-post offices across the country will not join the strike. He emphasized that these offices will remain operational, although the delivery of postal items could face delays due to the union action.

The strike is expected to disrupt key postal services nationwide if demands remain unresolved.
