Hartal in North and East Over Mullaitivu Death

A hartal is currently taking place in the North and East, organized by the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK). The protest follows the death of a 32-year-old man in Mullaitivu and alleged misconduct by the military.

According to reports, a group of individuals entered an army camp in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu, where they were allegedly assaulted by three military personnel. Later, one of the men was found dead in a nearby lake. Several army members have been accused of involvement in the incident.

Police confirmed that two special investigation teams have been deployed. Three army personnel have already been arrested and remanded.

ITAK MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam stated that the hartal is being held across the Northern and Eastern provinces to demand justice for the deceased. On August 16, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) also declared solidarity with the protest, calling it a peaceful campaign for accountability.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa urged residents of the North and East not to be misled by “false information and distortions” targeting the government and security forces.

He said, “Investigations are underway. Three army members have been arrested and handed over to the court.” The Minister also accused certain political groups of attempting to incite unrest through misinformation.

He further stressed the importance of the public understanding the true facts and maintaining peace.
