Sri Lanka Aviation Unit Praised for Successful UN CASEVAC Mission in Central African Republic

The Sri Lanka Aviation Unit deployed in Bria under the United Nations mandate in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has been officially commended for its remarkable execution of a high-risk Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) mission.

The mission was led by the 10th Aviation Contingent Commander, Group Captain Uditha De Silva, whose leadership, professionalism, and commitment were recognized for significantly contributing to the operation’s success.

The operation involved the urgent evacuation of three critically wounded UN personnel from Zemio, a region marked by instability and volatile threats. Using an Mi-17 helicopter (UNO 326P), the aircrew demonstrated exceptional precision and teamwork under extreme conditions.

The flight crew consisted of:

  • Wing Commander Ishan Thibbotumunuwe – Captain
  • Wing Commander Nadun Deneththi – Co-pilot
  • Flight Sergeant Chandana AMG
  • Sergeant Perera GGPK
  • Corporal Weerasinghe KPS
  • Corporal Rodrigo DVMP

Challenges included extreme dusty landing conditions, hostile tactical threats, and the need for a night extraction during adverse weather using Night Vision Goggles (NVG). Despite these obstacles, the team completed the mission with professionalism, ensuring the safe transfer of the casualties to Bria after 3 hours and 50 minutes of flying. Their swift action was critical in saving lives and fulfilling an urgent humanitarian duty.

In recognition of their bravery and expertise, the Force Commander of MINUSCA formally commended the Captain Pilot, the Co-pilot, and the Sri Lanka Aviation Unit.

Since its deployment in December 2024, the 10th Sri Lanka Aviation Unit has completed 16 CASEVAC missions and saved 18 lives, proving its vital role in UN peacekeeping operations under hazardous conditions.
