Beijing Floods Kill 30 as Xi Orders Urgent Rescue Operations

Beijing floods kill 30 as torrential rains battered China’s capital city over the weekend, intensifying into Monday (Jul 28). The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported the death toll had reached 30 by midnight Monday.

The victims were found mainly in the mountainous northern districts of Beijing, with 28 fatalities in Miyun and two in Yanqing. Authorities did not release further details about the time or cause of death.

Rainfall peaked at 543.4mm in some northern areas of Beijing, causing significant disruptions. At least 80,322 people were relocated as roads collapsed and communication lines were severed. Power outages affected 136 villages across the region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping responded late Monday by ordering “all-out” search and rescue operations. His directive emphasized minimizing casualties and restoring essential services.

Beijing issued its highest-level rain and flood alerts, urging residents to remain indoors. Emergency teams have been deployed to assess damage and assist affected communities.

The unusually intense rainfall is part of a broader trend of extreme weather impacting China in recent months, raising concerns over disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
