Kalmunai, Eastern Province — Once renowned for its vibrant cultural heritage, economic vitality, and deep-rooted Islamic traditions, the historic city of Kalmunai is now facing a growing threat that endangers its very identity: coastal erosion.

A City Losing Ground
In recent years, Kalmunai’s coastal regions have been steadily deteriorating due to intensified sea erosion. This environmental crisis is not only reshaping the coastline but also jeopardizing the livelihoods of the city’s fishing communities. Fishermen have been forced to abandon their workplaces and resting areas as the advancing sea swallows vital infrastructure, leaving entire neighborhoods vulnerable to displacement.
The damage extends beyond human impact. The erosion is contributing to serious environmental degradation, disrupting marine ecosystems and leading to the loss of critical habitats for many marine species.
Calls for Immediate Action
Though several interventions have been attempted in the past, including appeals by political representatives to the Director General of the Coastal Protection Department, concrete solutions have yet to materialize. Community leaders, including members of the Kalmunai Muhyiddeen Jumma Mosque and the Mosque Trustees Council, have also raised their concerns with the Ampara District Governor, urging swift and decisive action.
Without immediate mitigation efforts, residents warn that erosion could soon compromise key public infrastructure, including roads, community spaces, and significant buildings.
Community Proposals for Sustainable Solutions
Concerned citizens of Kalmunai have proposed several steps for the government to consider in order to protect the city from further destruction:
- Develop a Sustainable Coastal Protection Plan
Implement a long-term, science-based strategy to prevent further erosion. - Rehabilitate Affected Areas
Reconstruct and restore areas where fishermen and vulnerable communities reside. - Establish a Dedicated Task Force
Form a special team to continuously monitor the situation and recommend timely interventions.
Kalmunai stands at a critical juncture. As residents await government action, the need to preserve this historic coastal city has never been more urgent.
