Major Flood Warning Issued for Kelani River as Water Levels Continue to Rise
The Irrigation Department has issued a warning that a major flood situation could develop in low-lying areas along the Kelani River within the next 24 hours as persistent heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of Sri Lanka.
Authorities have urged residents living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible flooding.
High Flood Risk in Three Divisional Secretariat Areas
According to the Irrigation Department, residents in the following Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions face an elevated flood risk and should closely monitor official updates:
- Dehiowita
- Ruwanwella
- Yatiyantota
The Department warned that water levels in the Kelani River could rise rapidly due to continued rainfall in upstream catchment areas.
Minor Flooding Expected in Several Other Areas
The Department also cautioned that minor flooding may occur over the next 24 hours in low-lying areas within the following DS divisions along the Kelani River basin:
- Dompe
- Seethawaka
- Homagama
- Kaduwela
- Biyagama
- Kolonnawa
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
Public Urged to Exercise Extreme Caution
Authorities have advised motorists, residents living near the river, and those engaged in river-related activities to exercise extreme caution as water levels continue to rise.
People travelling through flood-prone areas have also been urged to follow instructions issued by the Disaster Management Centre, the Irrigation Department, and other emergency response agencies.
Officials continue to monitor the situation and have advised the public to stay updated through official weather and flood advisories as heavy rainfall persists across the country.
