Three Suspects Remanded in Connection with Killing of Weligama PS Chairman

Three individuals arrested in connection with the murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara have been remanded until October 30. The suspects were produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court today, October 28.

According to police, those in custody include the person who provided the motorcycle used by the gunmen, the individual who repaired the motorcycle, and a three-wheeler driver allegedly linked to the crime.

Wickramasekara was shot dead on Wednesday, October 22, inside his office at the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha premises. A gunman, disguised as a visitor and wearing a facemask, entered the office pretending to sign a letter. CCTV footage captured the assailant, dressed in a white shirt and black face mask, firing four shots at Wickramasekara, who was seated at his desk. The gunman fled the scene on a motorcycle with an accomplice.

The PS chairman sustained severe injuries to his head, chest, and abdomen and was rushed to Matara General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Following the murder, police teams were deployed under the direct supervision of SDIG Kithsiri Jayalath to investigate the case and apprehend those responsible.
