BREAKING: Lasitha Gunrathna Not Eligible to Contest SLR Presidency
Colombo – [Breaking] Former Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) President Lasitha Gunrathna will not be eligible to contest in the upcoming SLR elections, despite speculation to the contrary.

Gunrathna was first elected President at the Annual General Meeting on 21 May 2018, with his term officially ending on 20 May 2020, in accordance with the SLR constitution’s two-year limit for a presidential term.
Constitutional clauses in focus:
Clause 28.2: The President, office bearers and council members shall be elected at an AGM for a term not exceeding two (02) years.
Clause 28.6: Any person shall be eligible to be elected President if he/she has served as an Office-Bearer or Committee Member for at least one term within the five (05) years immediately prior to nomination.
Given that more than five years have now elapsed since the end of Gunrathna’s last term, he no longer meets the eligibility requirement outlined in Clause 28.6 — effectively ruling him out of the race for SLR President.
