SLMC MP M.L.A.M. Hizbullah Denies Claims of Being Deceived in Ghana Gold Deal

Sri Lanka’s Member of Parliament, M.L.A.M. Hizbullah, has rejected media reports claiming that he was deceived in a gold business deal in Ghana. These reports were circulated by certain Ghanaian media outlets, which alleged that the former minister had fallen victim to a scam involving gold.

In a statement issued by his media unit, MP Hizbullah’s team firmly denied these claims, asserting that there was no truth to the accusations. According to the statement, Dr. Hizbullah had traveled to Ghana for business purposes along with his friends from Saudi Arabia. During the visit, he became aware of a fraudulent scheme being attempted by certain individuals, and immediately alerted Ghanaian security authorities about the potential scam.

As a result of his actions, the Ghanaian police arrested 11 individuals involved in the attempted fraud. The statement emphasized that MP Hizbullah had no connection to the fraud or its perpetrators.

The statement further condemned the spread of false and politically motivated information, asserting that MP Hizbullah was not involved in any fraudulent activity.

This comes after recent reports in Ghanaian media, which claimed that the Accra Circuit Court Eight had granted bail to 11 individuals accused of defrauding a Sri Lankan MP of USD 2 million in a gold scam. According to the reports, the accused individuals posed as gold suppliers but failed to deliver the promised gold, resulting in the alleged fraud.

Ghanaian authorities reported that after receiving the money, the accused cut contact with MP Hizbullah. The suspects later re-established communication, offering to sell him 50kg of gold and even signed a Memorandum of Understanding to legitimize the deal. However, after an official complaint, a National Security team arrested the suspects on October 16, 2025, at Weija SCC, recovering two yellowish metals believed to be gold.
