Pavithra Fernando Announces Candidacy for Sri Lanka Rugby Presidency

Former national captain pledges revival and long-term growth for the sport

Colombo, Sri Lanka — [10 August 2025] — Former Sri Lanka rugby captain Pavithra “Pavi” Fernando has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), vowing to restore the sport’s glory and lay the foundations for a sustainable future.

Fernando’s announcement follows strong calls from rugby fans, players, and administrators for a fresh, dynamic leader to take the game forward. He is finalizing his leadership team for the upcoming, long-overdue SLR elections, with a detailed manifesto and strategic plan set to be unveiled soon.

“I have already identified a solid team of officials and an action plan that will ensure Sri Lanka Rugby returns to where it belongs,” Fernando stated. “My passion for the game is unmatched, and I will work tirelessly to achieve our goals.”

A Leader with Proven Credentials
Fernando combines on-field experience, academic qualifications, and administrative expertise. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University, has completed the Olympic Solidarity Sports Administrators Course and a Diploma in Management of Olympic Sports Organizations, and is certified in Strength & Conditioning by the Australian Strength & Conditioning Association—a key component in modern rugby development.

A Vision for the Future
Fernando’s two-year strategic plan focuses on the immediate revival of Sri Lanka Rugby, while his eight-year roadmap—to be revealed after nominations—will outline a comprehensive vision for long-term sustainability, grassroots development, and professional excellence.

A Distinguished Playing Career
A four-year coloursman of Royal College Colombo, Fernando earned national selection in his final year of school. He went on to represent CR & FC for 11 years, captaining the club to Clifford Cup victory in 2006, ending a 17-year drought. He represented Sri Lanka in three Rugby Asiads and captained the national side in the Asian Division 1 Tournament.
