Government Faces Challenge in Increasing Plantation Workers’ Daily Wages – Minister Bimal Rathnayake

Nanu Oya – Increasing the daily wages of plantation workers remains a significant challenge for the government, according to Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake.

He explained that both the Ministry of Plantation Industries and the Ministry of Finance are actively involved in ongoing discussions to address the issue.

Speaking to the media during an inspection visit to the Nanu Oya railway station, Minister Rathnayake acknowledged that plantation workers have been demanding higher wages from successive governments, yet their demands have gone unmet.

The current administration, led by the National People’s Power, had also promised to raise plantation workers’ wages in the run-up to the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

In a separate statement, the minister announced that future plans include providing bonuses to depots that operate at a profit.
