President’s Fund Grants Rs. 1 Million Compensation to Families of Ella–Wellawaya Bus Accident Victims

The President’s Fund has announced compensation of Rs. 1 million for each family of those who died in the Ella–Wellawaya bus accident that occurred last night (04), according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

The tragic incident took place near the 24th kilometer post on the Ella–Wellawaya main road around 9:00 p.m. when a bus carrying Tangalle Urban Council employees and their families veered off the road.

The bus first collided with an oncoming SUV and then struck a metal barrier before plunging nearly 1,000 feet down a precipice.

A total of 15 people lost their lives, including Tangalle Urban Council Secretary T.W.K. Rupasena, 12 council employees, two children, and the bus driver.

Meanwhile, 18 others — including several children — were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Badulla Teaching Hospital.

Authorities have launched further investigations into the cause of the accident.
