Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka has blamed external negativity, bowler-friendly pitches, and fitness issues as key factors behind the team’s early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Sri Lanka became the first team to be eliminated from semi-final contention after suffering a 61-run defeat in front of a packed R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo yesterday (25).

Speaking after the loss, Shanaka said persistent public criticism and negative commentary around the team had taken a heavy toll on players.

“No matter how much we try to stay positive, there is negativity outside. That’s a big loss for Sri Lankan cricket,” Shanaka said, adding that the level of criticism had become so severe that government intervention may be needed to protect future generations of players and their mental health.

Sri Lanka’s campaign unravelled following successive defeats to Zimbabwe, England, and New Zealand, despite entering the tournament amid high expectations. The team had already faced intense scrutiny due to inconsistent limited-overs performances since mid-2025.

Shanaka admitted that the team had misread the Premadasa pitch, which offered significant assistance to spinners earlier than expected. Sri Lanka lost six wickets to spin and were restricted to 107 for 8 against New Zealand.

The skipper also reiterated concerns about spin-friendly conditions at venues used during the tournament, stating that Sri Lanka’s batting line-up had been selected based on strong domestic strike rates.

Fitness concerns further compounded Sri Lanka’s struggles. Wanindu Hasaranga suffered a hamstring injury in the opening match, Matheesha Pathirana sustained a calf injury during the tournament, while Eshan Malinga was ruled out prior to the World Cup.

“Fitness has to be non-negotiable. When you have this many injuries, it’s very difficult to get results,” Shanaka said, noting that some players had missed selection due to fitness issues.

Shanaka also issued an apology to Sri Lanka’s fans, acknowledging the disappointment felt by supporters who turned out in large numbers in Colombo and Kandy.

“We all wanted to reach the semi-finals and make the country proud, but we couldn’t meet expectations. For that, we are truly sorry,” he said.
