Sri Lanka Aims to Boost Global Innovation Index Ranking Through Stakeholder Collaboration

Colombo – Sri Lanka has taken a key step toward improving its position in the internationally recognised Global Innovation Index (GII), which measures innovation performance across 80 indicators under seven core pillars.

Under the leadership of the National Innovation Agency (NIA), operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology, an advisory meeting on GII data requirements was held yesterday (14) at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced.

Senior representatives from both public and private sectors—including science, technology, education, and industry—participated in the discussions. The focus was on enhancing global competitiveness, attracting investment, and positioning Sri Lanka as a hub for knowledge, technology, and entrepreneurship.

The meeting underscored the Government’s commitment to fostering research and development, strengthening public–private partnerships, and building a robust innovation ecosystem aligned with national priorities. Attendees included key officials from ministries, national institutions, universities, and leading corporations—who are primary custodians of essential GII data.

The programme stressed closing data gaps, improving coordination, and defining clear stakeholder roles to elevate innovation performance. An interactive session also explored creating a sustainable national mechanism for data collection and reporting, ensuring Sri Lanka’s innovation potential is accurately represented on the global stage.

This initiative reflects the Government’s determination to make innovation a policy priority and a practical driver of national progress.
