The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced the government’s approval of a Time-Based Tariff Scheme for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) integrated with Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (RTSPV) installations.
Under the new scheme, electricity discharged from battery storage systems during the night-peak period (6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.) will be purchased by the CEB at a rate of Rs. 45.80 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

The initiative aims to encourage solar power producers to install battery storage systems, enabling them to store surplus daytime electricity and supply it to the national grid during evening peak hours. The CEB said this step will improve grid stability and reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel power generation.
CEB officials highlighted that this historic tariff mechanism represents a key milestone in promoting renewable energy integration, accelerating Sri Lanka’s transition to a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient power sector.
