Sri Lanka Reports 20 Rabies Deaths, Puttalam Records Four Fatalities

A total of 20 deaths caused by rabies have been reported in Sri Lanka so far, according to Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Professor Chandana Abheyaratne.

The Minister said that four of the reported rabies-related deaths occurred in the Puttalam District, highlighting the need for greater public awareness and preventive measures.

Speaking at an event held in Colombo, Professor Abheyaratne said that many rabies deaths could have been prevented if individuals and communities had fulfilled their social responsibilities properly.

He compared the situation to dengue prevention efforts, stating that diseases caused by avoidable risks can be reduced through greater public cooperation and timely action.

Importance of Rabies Prevention

Health authorities continue to advise the public to seek immediate medical attention following animal bites or suspected exposure to rabies.

Vaccination of domestic animals, responsible pet ownership, and early treatment after possible exposure remain key measures in preventing rabies-related deaths.

Officials have urged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with public health programmes aimed at reducing the spread of rabies across the country.
