Unregistered Elders’ Homes Given Until September 30 to Complete Registration

The Secretariat for Elders has granted all unregistered elders’ homes across Sri Lanka until September 30 to complete their registration process.

Director of the Secretariat for Elders, Chathura Mihidum, said legal action will be taken against institutions that fail to register before the deadline.

According to the Secretariat, only 148 elders’ homes have been officially registered out of the 459 facilities currently operating across the country.

Officials have urged all remaining institutions to complete the registration process within the stipulated period to ensure compliance with national regulations governing elderly care services.

The registration programme aims to improve the quality of care provided to senior citizens by ensuring that elders’ homes meet the required standards for safety, health, and welfare.

Authorities warned that institutions operating without registration after September 30 could face legal proceedings under the applicable laws.

The Secretariat for Elders continues to encourage all operators of residential care facilities for the elderly to obtain registration and adhere to the standards established for the protection and wellbeing of residents.
