Police Find No Evidence Linking 8-Year-Old Student to Kurunegala School Car Fire

The Sri Lanka Police have stated that there is no evidence linking an eight-year-old student to a vehicle fire that occurred within the premises of a school in Kurunegala.

The clarification follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a car engulfed in flames while a young child was seen walking nearby. Claims shared online alleged that the child was responsible for setting the vehicle on fire.

However, in an official statement, police said investigations conducted by the Kurunegala Police have so far found no eyewitness testimony or forensic evidence to support those allegations.

Investigators confirmed that the child seen in the video is a student of the same school, but stressed that there is currently no proof connecting the student to the incident.

Police have informed the relevant court of the developments in the investigation, while inquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing.

Authorities also said that expert analysis will be sought from the Government Analyst’s Department to determine the exact cause of the vehicle fire.

Police have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims on social media while the investigation remains ongoing.
