India-UK Trade Agreement Comes Into Force, Opening New Opportunities for Trade and Investment
The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) officially came into force yesterday, marking a major milestone in economic relations between the two countries.

The landmark agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral trade, boost investment, create employment opportunities, and expand market access for businesses while making several premium British products more affordable for Indian consumers.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the agreement as a “historic milestone”, saying it would create new opportunities for farmers, workers, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and innovators while supporting India’s long-term development vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
In a message shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi said the agreement would provide fresh momentum to Indian entrepreneurs and strengthen cooperation between India and the United Kingdom in technology, innovation, professional services, and skilled labour mobility.
Greater Access to the UK Market
Under the agreement, Indian exporters are expected to gain improved access to one of the world’s largest high-income consumer markets.
Sectors expected to benefit include:
- Textiles and garments
- Leather products and footwear
- Gems and jewellery
- Engineering goods
- Auto components
- Pharmaceuticals
- Chemicals
- Processed food
- Agricultural products
The agreement also provides improved opportunities for Indian IT companies, consulting firms, engineers, architects, accountants, healthcare professionals, and education service providers through easier market access and greater regulatory certainty.
Covering 137 service sub-sectors, CETA is regarded as one of India’s most comprehensive trade agreements focused on the services sector.
Relief for Indian Professionals Working in the UK
One of the agreement’s key features is the Double Contribution Convention (DCC).
Under this arrangement, Indian professionals temporarily working in the UK for up to five years will no longer be required to contribute to social security systems in both countries simultaneously.
The measure is expected to reduce costs for employees and employers while improving the competitiveness of Indian companies operating overseas.
Lower Prices for British Goods in India
Indian consumers are also expected to benefit as import duties on several British products are gradually reduced.
Products expected to become more affordable include:
- Scotch whisky
- Gin
- Premium British cars
- Luxury motorcycles
- Cosmetics
- Chocolates
- Biscuits
- Medical devices
- Selected food products
However, the Indian government has clarified that tariff reductions will be introduced gradually, with quota systems applying to certain products such as luxury vehicles to protect domestic industries, including India’s growing electric vehicle sector.
Investment and Economic Growth
Trade experts believe the agreement will encourage greater British investment in India across sectors such as clean energy, technology, financial services, manufacturing, and education.
By simplifying cross-border trade and strengthening economic cooperation, the India-UK CETA is expected to generate new employment opportunities, enhance exports, and provide Indian businesses with a stronger presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
