Sri Lanka Prepares for Possible El Niño Impacts Including Drought and Wildfires

The Sri Lankan government has begun implementing preparedness measures to address the potential impacts of future El Niño conditions, including possible droughts, increased wildfire risks, and other climate-related emergencies.

Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi said a special committee established to address challenges linked to El Niño conditions held a meeting on June 30 to assess potential risks and develop response strategies.

The discussions focused on measures required to reduce the impact of possible drought conditions, with special attention given to water resource management, disaster preparedness, and emergency response planning.

According to the Minister, relevant government institutions have already started necessary preparations through existing disaster management mechanisms and initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Environment.

Increased Risk of Wildfires

Minister Patabendi also warned that prolonged dry weather conditions associated with El Niño events could increase the possibility of wildfire incidents across the country.

He said authorities are aware of these risks and have taken precautionary steps to strengthen readiness for potential fire emergencies and other climate-related challenges.

The government is expected to continue monitoring weather patterns and strengthening coordination among relevant agencies to minimise the impact of extreme climate events on communities, agriculture, water resources, and the environment.
