Court of Appeal Reserves Order on Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Petition Over Easter Sunday Investigations
The Court of Appeal today concluded hearing a writ petition filed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is seeking an order preventing his arrest and detention in connection with the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
Following the conclusion of oral submissions, the Court fixed September 22 to deliver its ruling on whether the petition should be granted leave to proceed for a full hearing.
Written Submissions Due by August 31
The petition was heard before a bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysooriya and Justice Sarath Dissanayake.
The bench also directed all parties to file their written submissions relating to the petition on or before August 31.
Respondents Named in the Petition
In his application, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has named several senior officials as respondents, including:
- Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya
- Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara
- Officer-in-Charge of the CID’s investigative unit Madhawa Gunawardena
- The Attorney General
The petition seeks judicial intervention to prevent his arrest or detention while investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks continue.
The Court of Appeal’s decision on September 22 will determine whether the application will proceed to a full hearing.
