Train Drivers Strike on July 30–31 to Proceed as Planned
Train drivers strike July 30 will go ahead as planned, according to the Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union. The 48-hour token strike begins at midnight tonight (29 July) and will continue through 30 and 31 July.

Union General Secretary Chandana Weeranduwa confirmed the decision after repeated attempts to engage with authorities failed to yield solutions. He stated that despite informing the government and railway officials multiple times about their grievances, no firm responses have been provided.
A final meeting held yesterday (28 July) with the General Manager of Railways also ended without resolution. According to Weeranduwa, no acceptable proposals addressing the drivers’ concerns were made during the discussion.
Chairman of the Union, K.U. Konthasinghe, emphasized that the strike would only be called off if a positive response was received to their letter sent on July 22, 2025, to the Ministry of Transport and the Department of Railways.
The main issues cited by the union include long-standing administrative problems and poor infrastructure that directly affect train operations and driver safety.
With no breakthrough reached, commuters should expect significant disruptions to rail services on Tuesday and Wednesday.
