Public Hearing Begins Over Nationwide Power Outage on February 9, 2025
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) started a public hearing today (August 5) to investigate the nationwide power outage that occurred on February 9, 2025.

Senior officials, including the Acting General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), gave statements during the hearing held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.
The power outage affected the entire island and was initially attributed to a monkey falling on power lines at the Panadura Grid Substation, according to the Minister of Power and Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody. This explanation received widespread media attention both locally and internationally.
However, PUCSL expressed dissatisfaction with the Electricity Board’s reports and decided to reopen the investigation.
The hearing commenced at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until 6:00 p.m.
