Priyantha Weerasooriya Appointed as Sri Lanka’s 37th Inspector General of Police
Priyantha Weerasooriya has been officially appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka, the President’s Media Division confirmed. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake made the appointment, and the letter of appointment was presented by Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The new IGP will assume duties on August 14, 2025, at Police Headquarters, Colombo 02. Significantly, Weerasooriya is the first officer in the 158-year history of the Sri Lanka Police to rise from the rank of police constable to IGP. A Law graduate from the University of Colombo, he became an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) after qualifying as an Attorney-at-Law from the Sri Lanka Law College. He also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management.
Throughout his 36-year career, 10 IGPs have issued commendations for his exceptional service. His career includes serving as Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for Crime and Traffic, Director of Police Logistics, and participating in UN peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Haiti. Before becoming Acting IGP, he was the Senior DIG for the North Central Province.
