Uttarakhand Cloudbursts and Heavy Rains Leave 15 Dead, 16 Missing

Cloudbursts and heavy rains in Uttarakhand caused severe destruction in Dehradun and several other districts on Tuesday, leaving 15 people dead, 16 missing, and 900 stranded, according to officials.

Dehradun district reported the highest toll with 13 fatalities, while Nainital and Pithoragarh districts recorded one death each. The Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority confirmed that three people were injured and are receiving treatment.

Massive Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue efforts continued despite difficult weather conditions. Personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, and Fire Brigade successfully rescued around 900 stranded people. Among them were 400–500 students trapped at the Devbhoomi Institute campus in Paundha, who were safely evacuated.

In one dramatic rescue, an SDRF officer risked his life to save a boy clinging to an electric pole above floodwaters.

Temples, Roads, and Bridges Submerged

Most rivers, including the Tamsa (Tons) River, were in full spate. The rising waters inundated the historic Tapkeshwar Temple, submerging the giant Hanuman statue near its entrance. Priests said it was the highest river level seen in over 25 years.

Roads, houses, shops, and several bridges were washed away. The Dehradun–Mussoorie road was breached at multiple points, forcing police to urge tourists to remain in hotels and homestays until conditions improved.

Worst-Hit Areas and Rainfall Levels

The worst-hit areas included Sahastradhara, Maldevta, Santla Devi, and Dalanwala. Sahastradhara recorded 192 mm of rainfall, while Maldevta received 141.5 mm. Other areas, including Hathi Barkala, Jolly Grant, and Kalsi, also reported heavy rainfall.

Government Response

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Maldevta and other affected areas to assess the situation. He said, “All rivers are in spate, roads are breached, and normal life is severely affected. Rescue teams are working on a war footing.”

Dhami briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured full support from the Union government. Relief camps have been set up, providing food, water, and medicines to the displaced.

Situation Remains Critical

The Song River in Dehradun also swelled, threatening bridges and nearby settlements. Authorities continue to work to restore connectivity and provide relief. Search operations for the missing are ongoing.
