Former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon Arrested and to be Produced in Court

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (21).

CID officers arrested Tennakoon at his residence yesterday (20). His arrest is linked to the May 9, 2022 attack on the ‘Aragalaya’ protest movement at Galle Face Green, Colombo.

Bail Application Rejected

On the same day, August 20, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court rejected an anticipatory bail application filed on behalf of Tennakoon. The application sought to prevent his impending arrest.

The bail request, submitted by his legal team, was reviewed by Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, who dismissed the plea.

With the rejection of bail, Tennakoon was subsequently arrested and is now set to appear before the Magistrate’s Court.
