Southern Province Becomes First in Sri Lanka to Fully Adopt GovPay Digital Payments
All District and Divisional Secretariats in the Southern Province have officially adopted GovPay, the Government Digital Payments Platform, making it the first province in Sri Lanka to achieve this milestone.
The launch took place yesterday (15) at the Matara District Secretariat, under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eng. Eranga Weeraratna. The ceremony was attended by Members of Parliament Akram Ismail, Lal Premananth, Harsha Purasinghe (Board Director of ICTA), Channa De Silva (CEO of LankaPay), Chandana Thilakarathna (District Secretary of Matara), along with several other distinguished guests.
With this initiative, residents of the Southern Province can now make secure and convenient digital payments for services at three District Secretariats and 50 Divisional Secretariats. Payments can be made instantly using internet or mobile banking portals of participating banks, or through any FinTech application linked to GovPay.
According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, 132 government institutions are now connected to GovPay. Since its launch in February this year, GovPay has processed payments worth over Rs. 110 million across 1,767 government services, supported by 14 banks and six FinTech apps.
Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratna hailed the achievement as a “special milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital journey,” emphasizing that the initiative would reduce inefficiencies, increase transparency, and build public trust in government services.
MP Akram Ismail called it a “historic step forward,” stating that nationwide digitalization would help eradicate fraud and corruption. ICTA Director Harsha Purasinghe highlighted that integrating 53 Secretariats at once demonstrates how technology can transform daily life, while LankaPay CEO Channa De Silva praised the Southern Province for pioneering cashless government services.
With the rollout of GovPay across the Southern Province, citizens now benefit from modern, reliable, and people-centered digital payment services, paving the way for a more transparent and efficient government.
