Sri Lanka to Enforce Strict Laws Against Vehicles With Dangerous Modifications

The strict enforcement of laws against vehicles with dangerous and unauthorized modifications will begin today (September 8), Deputy Minister of Transport Dr. Prasanna Gunasena announced.

In a statement on his official Facebook page, the Deputy Minister said special attention will be given to vehicles fitted with excessively loud sound systems and multi-colored flashing lights, which violate transport regulations.

The announcement comes in the wake of a tragic accident on September 4 near the 24th milepost on the Ella–Wellawaya road. A luxury jeep rear-ended a bus, forcing it off the road and down a 1,000-foot precipice.

The bus was carrying 32 individuals, including employees of the Tangalle Municipal Council and their relatives, on a leisure trip.

As a result, 15 people lost their lives, while 17 others were injured. Among those hurt were two individuals who had attempted to rescue victims, as well as an Army Special Forces officer, who is still receiving treatment at the Badulla Teaching Hospital.

Deputy Minister Gunasena stressed that stricter enforcement of vehicle regulations is essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
