Suspect Arrested in Matara Over Shooting at Weligama NPP Member’s Residence

Matara, 28 July — Police have arrested a 33-year-old suspect in Matara linked to a shooting incident at the home of Tharaka Nanayakkara, a National People’s Power (NPP) member of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha.

Suspect Arrested in Matara Over Shooting at Weligama NPP Member’s Residence

The shooting took place on 16 July in Udukawa, Weligama, when two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle reportedly fired shots at the residence at around 4:40 a.m. The suspects fled the scene immediately after.

According to the Police Media Division, no one was injured during the incident, with shots fired only at the gate of the house.

The NPP member had previously informed police about receiving death threats prior to the shooting.

Investigations are ongoing.
