Call of Duty Movie Confirmed to Take Place in Modern Warfare Universe
The highly anticipated Call of Duty movie from Paramount Pictures and Activision will be set within the franchise’s popular Modern Warfare universe, the companies have confirmed.
The announcement was made during the Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City, where director and co-writer Peter Berg revealed details about the upcoming video game-to-film adaptation.
Berg, along with co-writer Taylor Sheridan, will bring the long-running military shooter franchise to the big screen with a story based in the Modern Warfare universe.
Modern Warfare Era Comes to Hollywood
The decision to focus on the Modern Warfare series gives fans a possible indication of the direction the film could take, although details regarding the plot and characters have not yet been revealed.
The Modern Warfare universe was introduced with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released in 2007. The game marked a major shift for the franchise by moving away from the historical World War settings of earlier titles and introducing a modern military environment.
The series introduced some of Call of Duty’s most recognisable characters, including Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, Ghost, and villain Vladimir Makarov.
Two Decades of Modern Warfare Stories
Over the years, Modern Warfare has evolved through multiple releases, remasters, and a major reboot.
The original trilogy released between the late 2000s and early 2010s followed Task Force 141 as they carried out international missions involving political conflicts, military operations, and global threats.
In 2019, Activision and developer Infinity Ward launched a rebooted version of Modern Warfare, introducing updated versions of familiar characters alongside new storylines.
The next major entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Film Story and Cast Still Unknown
While the Modern Warfare setting has been confirmed, Paramount and Activision have not revealed whether the movie will adapt events from the games or introduce a completely new storyline within the universe.
Director Peter Berg has also not disclosed details about the cast or the characters that will appear in the film.
The decision to begin the Call of Duty movie franchise with Modern Warfare rather than the popular Black Ops series remains unclear.
The Call of Duty movie is currently scheduled for release on June 30, 2028.
