Sri Lanka Passport Ranking Improves to 94th in Henley Passport Index 2026
Sri Lanka’s passport has recorded a significant improvement in the latest Henley Passport Index 2026 Global Ranking, reflecting a steady recovery in the country’s international mobility position.
According to the latest index, the Sri Lankan passport is ranked 94th in the world, with Sri Lankan citizens receiving visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 39 destinations globally.
The latest ranking marks one of Sri Lanka’s strongest performances in recent years and highlights a gradual improvement in the global standing of the country’s passport.
Sri Lanka Shows Continued Improvement
Sri Lanka shares the 94th position in the ranking alongside Libya, moving ahead of several countries placed in the lower tier of the index.
The Henley Passport Index, considered one of the world’s leading passport ranking systems, evaluates 199 passports based on access to 227 destinations without requiring a prior visa.
Sri Lanka’s latest position continues a positive trend after several years of fluctuations.
The country was ranked:
- 96th in 2024 and 2025
- 100th in 2023
- 102nd in 2022
- 107th in 2021
The latest result represents a 13-place improvement compared to Sri Lanka’s ranking five years ago.
Strongest Ranking Since Pre-Pandemic Period
Historical data shows that Sri Lanka was ranked 97th in 2020 and 96th in 2019, making the current 94th position the country’s strongest placement since the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The improvement comes amid the recovery of international travel networks and increased global engagement in areas such as tourism, trade, foreign employment and diplomatic relations.
Singapore Tops Global Passport Rankings
At the top of the 2026 Henley Passport Index, Singapore retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport, offering access to 192 destinations without a prior visa.
Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates ranked second, with access to 188 destinations.
Positive Indicator for Sri Lanka’s Global Connectivity
Passport strength is often considered an indicator of a country’s international relationships, diplomatic influence and the ease with which citizens can travel for tourism, business and employment opportunities.
The improvement in Sri Lanka’s passport ranking is expected to support the country’s efforts to strengthen global connectivity and expand opportunities for Sri Lankans overseas.
