Sri Lanka’s Migrant Worker Remittances Surpass US$5 Billion in First Seven Months
Sri Lanka has received more than US$5 billion in remittances from migrant workers during the first seven months of this year, marking a significant increase compared with the same period last year.
According to the latest figures, remittances received between January and July 2026 have exceeded US$5,000 million.
During the corresponding period in 2025, Sri Lanka received US$4,435.2 million in migrant worker remittances.
The increase highlights the continued importance of overseas workers’ earnings to Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange inflows and economic stability.
Remittances could reach US$10 billion
Speaking at a meeting with professionals in Passara, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe said remittances are expected to reach US$10 billion this year.
The expected increase would provide further support to Sri Lanka’s external sector and strengthen foreign currency inflows into the country.
Migrant worker remittances have remained an important source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, particularly as the country continues efforts to strengthen its economy and improve its external position.
The government has also been focusing on supporting Sri Lankans working overseas and encouraging increased formal remittance channels.
If the current upward trend continues, Sri Lanka could record a substantial increase in annual remittance inflows by the end of 2026.
