Sri Lanka Dengue Cases Surpass 90,000 as 65 Deaths Reported
Sri Lanka has recorded 90,306 dengue cases so far this year, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), as health authorities warn the public to remain vigilant amid continuing rainy weather.
The Western Province continues to account for the largest share of reported infections, with 52.96% of all dengue cases recorded in the province.
Health authorities have reported 65 dengue-related deaths during the same period.
July records highest monthly dengue cases
July recorded the highest number of dengue cases in Sri Lanka so far this year, with 29,973 patients diagnosed during the month.
The upward trend has continued into August, with 4,959 cases reported during the first few days of the month.
Authorities have also identified 119 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across the country as high-risk dengue areas.
Community Medicine Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera of the National Dengue Control Unit urged the public to remain particularly cautious due to the prevailing rainy weather conditions.
Health officials have repeatedly warned that stagnant water created by rainfall can provide breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
The public has therefore been urged to regularly inspect homes and surrounding areas, remove containers and other items that can collect stagnant water, and take necessary precautions to reduce mosquito breeding.
With dengue cases continuing to rise, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and calling for greater public participation in dengue prevention efforts.
