England Clinch Euro 2025 Title After Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory Over Spain
England’s Lionesses claimed back-to-back European Championship titles with a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout win over Spain in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final, after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

Chloe Kelly sealed the victory by scoring the decisive penalty, helping England avenge their 2023 World Cup final loss to Spain and retain their continental crown. The final, held at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, saw Spain dominate early, with Mariona Caldentey heading in a first-half goal to put La Roja ahead.
Despite trailing, England remained calm, just as they had in earlier knockout rounds. Alessia Russo equalized with a powerful header in the 57th minute after a cross from substitute Chloe Kelly.
The match proceeded through extra time with no further goals, leading to a tense penalty shootout. Spain faltered under pressure, missing three of their four spot-kicks. Even Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati saw her attempt saved. For England, only Beth Mead and Leah Williamson missed, while Alex Greenwood and Niamh Charles converted.
England manager Sarina Wiegman celebrated her third consecutive European Championship title — having previously led the Netherlands to victory in 2017 and England in 2022.
“Losing your first match and still becoming champions is just incredible,” said Wiegman. England had started the tournament with a loss to France but bounced back with resilience.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, present at the final, hailed the team as “history makers,” stating, “What a team. What drama. You’ve made the nation proud.”
Spain, despite dominating possession and controlling large portions of the game, failed to convert their chances and paid the price. “Football is cruel,” said a devastated Bonmati, who apologized for her missed penalty.
The Lionesses now prepare to build on this success with the T20 Asia Cup and future international tournaments on the horizon. With Chloe Kelly once again proving decisive and Sarina Wiegman further solidifying her legendary status, England’s women’s football continues to shine on the global stage.
