Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith Seeks Court Permission to Intervene in Suresh Salley PTA Case

A new legal development has emerged in the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, with Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith filing an intervening petition before the Court of Appeal regarding a petition submitted by former Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Suresh Salley.

Salley’s petition challenges his arrest and detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.

Through the intervening petition, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has requested permission from the Court of Appeal to become a party to the proceedings and make submissions regarding Salley’s application.

The petition also seeks an order from the court to dismiss the application filed by the former intelligence chief.

The legal challenge relates to Salley’s detention and the circumstances surrounding investigations conducted into the Easter Sunday attacks, which claimed more than 250 lives in 2019.

The matter is scheduled to be considered tomorrow before a Court of Appeal bench comprising President of the Court of Appeal Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

The Court of Appeal is expected to consider the submissions from all parties before making further decisions regarding the proceedings.
