Eight Colombo Public Health Inspectors Contract Dengue During Prevention Operations

Eight Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) in the Colombo District have contracted dengue fever while carrying out dengue prevention and control operations, health officials revealed.

Speaking at a media briefing today (July 9), Colombo District Branch Chairman of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union, Amit Kumar, said the officers became infected while performing their duties as dengue cases continue to rise across the district.

He also stated that several other employees in the health sector have contracted the mosquito-borne disease, highlighting the increasing risk faced by frontline workers involved in dengue control activities.

According to Kumar, legal action was taken against 1,186 individuals during inspections conducted throughout June for failing to comply with dengue prevention regulations.

Authorities also collected Rs. 12.25 million in fines through enforcement measures targeting those responsible for maintaining mosquito breeding sites.

The legal action included cases involving:

  • 494 residential properties
  • 134 government and private institutions
  • 4 schools
  • 2 religious places

Kumar stressed that dengue prevention inspections and enforcement operations will continue across the Colombo District, adding that the law will be enforced without discrimination, regardless of an individual’s position or social status.

Health authorities continue to urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, maintain clean surroundings, and cooperate with Public Health Inspectors to help control the spread of dengue, which has seen a significant increase across Sri Lanka this year.
