EU and US Finalize Trade Deal With 15% Tariff on European Exports
🇺🇸🇪🇺 EU and US Finalize Trade Deal With 15% Tariff on European Exports The United States and the European Union have agreed on a new trade deal, ending months of tension between the two global powers.
US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sealed the agreement after private talks at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. As part of the deal, the US will impose a 15% tariff on all European exports — half the 30% tariff Trump had earlier threatened.

In return, the EU will offer zero tariffs on certain US goods. These include aircraft parts, agricultural items, and specific chemicals.
Von der Leyen called the agreement “a huge deal” after what she described as “tough negotiations.” Trump echoed the sentiment, saying: “It’s going to bring us closer together.”
The EU also pledged $600 billion in US investments, including military equipment and energy. Von der Leyen added that $750 billion will go toward American liquified natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuels — reducing Europe’s dependency on Russian energy sources.
Despite the progress, the US will maintain its global 50% tariff on steel and aluminum. However, both leaders hinted at future cooperation, including a possible semiconductor deal.
Trump, who has pushed tariffs to reshape trade, said this agreement would generate around $90 billion in revenue for the US. For Europe, the 15% tariff is higher than the UK’s 10% deal but matches Japan’s recent agreement.
Leaders across Europe reacted cautiously. Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the higher tariffs will make trade “more expensive and more challenging.” Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the need for stable trade. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the deal but said she would examine the details.
The US and EU traded nearly $1 trillion in goods last year. Trump has often criticized the trade imbalance, noting the US imported $606 billion from the EU but exported only $370 billion.
The EU had prepared retaliatory tariffs targeting Boeing, car parts, and American beef if talks had failed.
Trump plans to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Turnberry on Monday. On Tuesday, he will travel to Aberdeen, where his family is launching a third golf course.
