Government Approves Rs. 1,008 Million Project to Renovate 126 School Hostels

COLOMBO — The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for a major nationwide project to renovate dilapidated school hostels across Sri Lanka. The initiative carries an estimated cost of Rs. 1,008 million and will span a three-year period from 2026 to 2028.
The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.

Background and Necessity
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Division, the government identified 126 school hostel buildings within the state school system that are currently in a severely dilapidated condition due to a prolonged lack of adequate maintenance.
The statement noted that the poor state of these facilities has actively degraded both the daily living conditions and the overall educational environment of the resident students.

The primary objective of the newly approved project is to reverse this decline and ensure student welfare. The funds will be utilized to:
