UNP Raises Safety Concerns Over Akila Viraj Kariyawasam Amid Prison Unrest

COLOMBO: The United National Party (UNP) has raised concerns over the safety of former Education Minister and party Deputy Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, amid recent unrest at Colombo Magazine Prison.

In a letter addressed to the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons, the UNP called on prison authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Kariyawasam while he remains in custody.

The letter, signed by UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, stated that the current situation inside the prison could pose a risk to the former minister’s safety.

The party reminded prison authorities of their responsibility to take all necessary measures to protect Kariyawasam and ensure his wellbeing while he remains under their custody.

The UNP has also requested an opportunity to meet with the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons to discuss the concerns surrounding the former minister’s safety.

The request comes amid heightened security at several correctional facilities following recent disturbances, including unrest reported at Colombo Magazine Prison.

Authorities have strengthened security measures at affected prisons as investigations into the incidents continue.
